She didn’t always understand it quite that way, however. Courageous was raised to believe that it was acceptable to allow someone to describe to you who you are rather than defining it for yourself. It was the foundational design of her development, and it set her up to expect relationships to be one-sided and emotionally unsafe, leaving her in the position to “make it work well”. If it failed, that foundational design left her with the guilt of feeling the responsibility for the failure. She now understands that foundational training primed her to accept that in intimate relationships, work relationships, spiritual relationships... all relationships. She also now understands that there are people in society who search for those who have that training - to exploit it. When she exited a 13-year intimate partner relationship because she came to understand it was steeped in multiple abuses, including psychological and sexual, she not only wanted to learn how and why it happened to her, but how she and other Black sisters could avoid it in the future. This painstaking documentation of her own foundational development and awakening led her to develop what she deems the most important work in her 8 years of curriculum design and delivery - Empowerment through the ArtsTM. Black trauma-informed therapists recommend it and Black female focus group participants praise this work as being incredibly effective. When Courageous started the movement with this curriculum at the helm, she thought she was being called on to share this discovery with women in general. As she has begun to truly understand how this DV (domestic violence) plague gravely impacts the Black community in crushingly higher numbers than others, she now recognizes her work is for her own.
